The project VLCFAT - "Voltage-Level-Specific Carbon Footprint Accounting Technology and Application for Power Transmission and Distribution" develops a standardized, life-cycle-based approach to quantify and allocate the carbon footprint of electricity transmission and distribution (T&D). It reviews and compares international technical frameworks and accounting rules, then defines clear system boundaries and unit process classifications tailored to T&D.
The project builds a dedicated life-cycle emissions inventory and dataset for T&D assets and projects, including assessing how weather and climate events affect emissions. It also proposes methods to allocate carbon-emission responsibility under cross-regional power flows (e.g., provincial-level footprints) and across voltage levels, supported by practical data acquisition techniques aligned with domestic and international voltage classifications. Finally, it models the carbon footprint of typical electrical equipment and T&D projects with sensitivity analyses, and establishes data collection and quality assessment methods to support international mutual recognition and a dedicated T&D carbon footprint database.
